Overview
Interpreters are professionals who function as linguistic and cultural mediators between individuals who are hearing and individuals who are deaf, deaf-blind, or hard of hearing. Interpreter education is accomplished through a learning model that is developmental, sequential and spiral within a task-analysis approach. UALR’s program includes second language learning, foundations in deafness, deafblindness, and deaf culture, beginning to advanced methods in interpretation, electives, and core requirements. Priority is placed on the acquisition of requisite knowledge, values, and competencies by balancing second language learning and interpretation theory with practical applications so that candidate proficiencies are aligned with national, professional and state standards. UALR abides by program standards set forth by the Conference of Interpreter Trainers. You may apply to the program by following general admission requirements for the university and contacting any faculty member in the Interpreter Education Program.
