Major: Information Science
Minors: Digital Graphics, Spanish
Donaghey Scholar

Where did you go to High School?

Mount Saint Mary Academy

Why did you choose UALR?

I chose UALR for several reasons. When I initially applied, I was offered a CyberScholar Scholarship through the EIT Department. Soon afterward, I received an offer from the Donaghey Scholars Program. With both of these opportunities, I would be allowed to study what I wanted to study while also feeling challenged across multiple disciplines through the honors program.

Furthermore, with the Donaghey Scholars Program, not only was I blessed by not having to pay for my tuition, but also I was given the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Salamanca, Spain. Because of these wonderful offers, I immediately knew that UALR was the right place for me.

Additionally, I was given the opportunity to play college soccer, something that was very important to me. I toured several other universities, but when it came down to it, I just knew that UALR was where I needed to be to get the most out of my education.

What impresses you most about UALR?

I think what impresses me most about UALR is the diversity that I have been able to experience. When I go to class, I am in there with people of all backgrounds. I think I have been given a special opportunity to experience this. The Donaghey Scholars Program is known for its great diversity.

I love being in class with only fifteen students and knowing that each of us is truly different. I love the various insights that I am able to experience from being in such classes. I have also been able to witness this diversity firsthand with my Information Science classes. Because UALR is so distinguished when it comes to its EIT departments and programs, students come from across the country and even the world to study here. It is truly an amazing and eye-opening experience.

What impresses you about Little Rock?

I have lived in Little Rock my whole life which, I think, has been a great advantage. I know the city pretty well, but one thing I have learned about it since being in college is the amazing opportunities that are available.

There are so many companies right here that are looking to employ students from local universities. They are reaching out to students for internships and jobs. I receive emails almost everyday about new internships and job opportunities. With the economy the way it is, it is comforting to know that there are still local companies willing to give us a shot; not to mention a university that stands behind their graduating students.

What are your career plans?

Ultimately, I hope to combine my Information Science degree with my Digital Graphics minor to work in the web design/web development field. I am planning on graduating in December.

If things continue the way they are, I am hoping to work for a local company doing some marketing design, web design, and technical work for them. I eventually hope to return to UALR and earn my masters degree.

How has living in the capital city influenced your career?

Living in the capital city has allowed me to make contacts that normally would not have been available to me. Going to school near so many great technology-based companies has given me the chance to experience various jobs in a one-on-one setting.

Because of this, I have been able to expand what I learn in the classroom and apply it to the real world. I was given the opportunity to do a summer internship with Arkansas Business Publishing Group’s web design and development team, FLEX360.

I was also given the chance to participate in a capstone project with the Arkansas Department of Information Systems. I currently work for UALR’s Web Services department which has given me even more experience to aid me in my future career. Through these things, I have been able to make contacts with potential employers. As a result, I feel as though I am at a great advantage for finding a job after I graduate.

What type of opportunities has living in the capital city afforded you?

Being in Little Rock has allowed me to do many things that I love doing. Because I went to high school here, I have been able to continue many of those things I did before college. I am a volunteer soccer coach for Mount Saint Mary Academy. I also have the pleasure of serving as one of MSM’s alumni class representatives. In addition, I am able to continue playing soccer here in Little Rock.

What are your favorite leisure activities (hobbies) in Little Rock/Central Arkansas?

My favorite leisure activity in Little Rock is, by far, playing soccer. I currently play for the Arkansas Central Soccer Association in an adult, co-ed league. I also, of course, love coaching my girls. In my spare time, I enjoy climbing Pinnacle Mountain and walking the Big Dam Bridge.
