Academic Success

About the Collegiate Success Program

In August 2005, the Department of Education awarded UALR a five year grant to implement learning communities on UALR’s campus. These learning communities combined with other services are better known as the Collegiate Success Program. The purpose of the UALR Collegiate Success Program is to provide at-risk students with the academic foundation they need to successfully matriculate in college-level courses. The Collegiate Success Programs consist of two components: linked learning communities and academic advising.

Learning Communities
The program was implemented Spring 2006, with the offering of five learning communities. Each academic year, thereafter, five learning communities will be added to the offerings, for a total of 25 learning communities by 2009-2010. By that time, 500 students will be able to enroll in a learning community each academic year. Each learning community consists of linked courses with the same students enrolling in the same courses at sequential times. Specifically, each learning community consists of either College Reading (READ 0310) or Composition Fundamental (RHET 0310) paired with First Year Experience (PEAW 1300) and has a maximum enrollment of 20 students.

Academic Advising
Academic advising is provided for freshmen and transfer freshmen with less than the state-mandated ACT, SAT, and Accuplacer scores in English, Reading, or Math. These students will sign a contract and be provided with continuous academic monitoring during their first year. They will also meet with their academic advisor twice a semester.
