Program for Enhanced Learning
The Program for Enhanced Learning (PEL) offer services to students needing to increase their academic skills for success. Courses in the areas of reading and study skills are open to all students and include: College Reading (READ 0310), Reading for Academic Content (READ 1311), and College Study Skills (READ 1310). The PEL also provides test preparation to students planning for the ACT, GRE, and PRAXIS. Students receiving PEL services have access to computer labs dedicated to their exclusive use.
Courses
COLLEGE READING (READ 0310): A three-hour combination laboratory and lecture course designed to improve students reading comprehension, vocabulary, and reading rate. This course is required for all freshmen and transfer freshmen with less than the state-mandated ACT, SAT, and Compass scores in English, Reading or Math. Students work individually or in small groups on a variety of materials including a text, numerous novels, computer assisted instruction, and Internet research.
READING FOR ACADEMIC CONTENT (READ 1311): A three-combination laboratory and lecture course designed for students who want practical information on improving their reading rate and comprehension. Students will be introduced to scholastic reading strategies and methods for use in their other college courses.
COLLEGE STUDY SKILLS (READ 1310): A three-hour degree credit course designed to provide practical instruction in skills needed for success and retention in college. This course will assist in learning techniques that will help in raising your GPA, increasing time management skills, improving test taking strategies, and taking better notes. A student should have completed 12 college credits prior to enrolling in this course.
Test Preparation
The PEL Program offers test preparation sessions for students wanting to get ready for the ACT, GRE, and PRAXIS. To sign-up for services please contact the ASC main office at (501) 569-3280.
Computer Lab
The PEL Lab is located in the Speech Communication Building, room 102. The lab offers software and tutorial assistance for general reading improvement and standardized test preparation. Hours of operation are:
Monday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
