Peer Mentoring Program
Q: What is the Adult Student Peer Mentoring Program?
A: The peer mentoring program pairs a new adult student with a current adult student for the purpose of providing one-on-one support during the first semester. A peer mentor will provide information, assistance and encouragement, as well as a connection to the university for the new adult student. The program also contributes to the sense of community at UALR by providing opportunities for adult students to meet one another.
Q: When does the program begin, and what are the requirements to participate in the program?
A: The Adult Student Peer Mentoring Program for the spring semester will begin in January and end in May.
While there are no requirements for you to meet, you will be invited to:
- attend a luncheon to meet your mentor
- inform your mentor of the manner in which you wish to be contacted during the semester by phone, e-mail, or other
- complete an evaluation of your experience with the program and have the opportunity to nominate your mentor to be Outstanding Mentor and win a $50 bookstore gift certificate.
Q: Who can be an adult student peer mentor?
A: Any current adult student with a desire to help someone else make a successful transition to college life.
Q: What are the responsibilities of the peer mentor?
A: Peer mentor responsibilities include the following:
- attend a peer mentor training session
- attend the adult student information session (fall) or open house (spring) to meet your mentee
- contact mentees by phone, e-mail, or in person at least once a month during the semester
- attend a get-together at the end of the semester
- complete an evaluation of your experience as a peer mentor
Q: What is the role of the Adult Student Advocacy office in this program?
A: The Adult Student Advocacy office will train the mentors, match mentors and mentees, provide activities, to all participants, and support mentors and mentees by providing information, referrals, and advice.
Q: How can I participate in the Adult Student Peer Mentoring Program?
A: Complete an application form and return or mail it to Pattie Hornbeck, Office of Campus Life, DSC 216, UALR, 2801 S. University, Little Rock, AR 72204.
