Adult Student Advocacy

Peer Mentoring

What is NTSP Peer Mentoring?
Peer Mentoring pairs a new non-traditional student with a current non-traditional student for the purpose of providing one-on-one support during the first semester. A peer mentor will provide information, assistance about the university and your degree program. A peer mentor is a guide, friend, and fellow student, who assists the new student with areas of adjustment and transition into university life as a non-traditional student. Through active listening and sharing of personal experiences, the mentor guides and advises the mentee as they acclimate to college life.

Benefits of Being a Peer Mentor

  • The satisfaction of passing along a legacy of knowledge, insight and experience
  • Enhancing one’s own coaching skills
  • Improved understanding about how others view the world
  • Enhanced self-esteem and respect that comes from working with and helping a fellow classmate
  • The satisfaction of making a difference in someone’s life

Do you have what it takes to be a successful mentor?

  • Do you enjoy being with and interacting with others?
  • Would others describe you as good at talking and listening to them?
  • Do you have a in-depth knowledge of your college/program?
  • Are you willing to help others be successful in reaching their educational goals?
  • Can you encourage and be patient?
  • Are you willing to share your experiences as a non-traditional student?

Want to be a mentor?

We are currently seeking energetic, enthusiastic and experienced non-traditional students to become the mentor of a new non-traditional student. As a mentor, you will be able to experience self-enrichment, community service, and networking, while at the same time, supporting other students. As a mentor, you will assist and guide a nontraditional student who could benefit from your experiences. The time commitment required to be a mentor is minimal. We strive to pair Mentors with Mentees who have similar academic interests, but we are not always able to do so, depending on the availability of the Mentors volunteers.

Need a Mentor?

If you are a newly admitted, first degree-seeking non-traditional students wishing to receive support and encouragement from an experienced non-traditional student, please fill out the application.
