Adult Student Advocacy

Who Am I?

Who, exactly, is considered an adult or nontraditional student?

You are an adult student if you are in any one of the following categories:

  • You are age 25 or over
  • You are married, divorced, or widowed
  • You are a parent
  • You have served in the military
  • You are not coming to college straight out of high school
  • You are working full-time or part-time
  • You are responsible for yourself

Most colleges classify adult students as anyone 25 and older. However, any one of the above criteria can complicate the process of entering or returning to college.

Even a one year break in the educational experiencecan cause feelings of doubt and uncertainty about one’s ability. Juggling family and job responsibilities with classroom requirements can create a great deal of stress. The decision to go to college is a major one, and adult students often have special concerns about going back to school. To make this transition an easy one, UALR’s Adult Student Advocacy Program (ASAP) offers a support program from registration to graduation. ASAP provides a connection between the University and the prospective or current adult student in the following ways:

  • assistance with the admission and application process
  • information regarding campus resources, services, and opportunities
  • an ongoing system of support and encouragement
  • opportunities to meet other adult students and share experiences
  • referrals to appropriate staff and faculty
  • provides fast information and assistance to busy adult students

Entering or returning to college can be as easy as reaching for the telephone or sending an email ASAP: (501) 569-3370 or asap@ualr.edu.
