UALR Trailblazer Receives Friends at Birthday Fundraiser

Betty Jo Stephens, a women’s athletics icon celebrated her birthday at a party where guests were encouraged to make gifts to her beloved Trojan Athletic Foundation.

The event, hosted by the UALR Department of Athletics was held Thursday, Nov. 17 at the UALR Jack Stephens Center Legends Room. Attendees enjoyed a birthday cake decorated with a caricature of Betty Jo wearing a Shirley Temple style dress much unlike the athletic jersey’s she so famously produced as the Women’s Coordinator of Athletics at UALR in the 1970s. Current student athlete Rebecca McEachern recipient of the Betty Jo Stephens Women’s Athletic Scholarship, and a competitive member of the UALR swim team honored Betty Jo in her remarks for pioneering Title IX some 40 years ago. She was recognized in 2010 with the UALR Alumni Association’s President’s Award.

Wishing the UALR legend well were her daughter and son-in law, Cindy and Jim Witowski, her son, Michael Sutton; close friends, Donna Quimby, Win Norwood, Mary Good, Emily Dickinson, Richard Turner, Jimmy and Anne Smith, Elaine and Robert Landrum, Sheila and Ron Paulson, Ginger Unser, Sandy Webb, Monty Wong, and Linda Faulkner. Also in attendance were Chris Peterson, UALR Director of Athletics , Anne Mourning, from UALR Office of Development, and Joe Foley, Trojan Women head basketball coach.
