Ray Hobbs is a 38 year Veteran of Corrections, who has been at the helm of the Arkansas Department of Correction as Director for the past three years. Prior to Director, Hobbs served as Interim Director for the Department of Correction from January 1, 2010 until officially named Director on June 20, 2010.
Prior to the Interim Director position, Hobbs served as Chief Deputy Director for nine years. He began his employment at the Department of Correction in 1975 as an Entry Level Correctional Officer. After quickly moving through the ranks as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Major of Security, he was promoted to Assistant Warden and to Warden a year later. In 1994,Hobbswas promoted to the position of Assistant Director for Institutions, Deputy Director of Institutions in 1998 and Chief Deputy Director in 2001.
Hobbsis nationally recognized for his work with Emergency Preparedness, Prison Rape Elimination Act, Accreditation Process for Accrediting Correctional Facilities. He is also a member of Southern States Correctional Association, Arkansas Criminal Justice Association, North America Association for Wardens, American Correctional Association and Association of State Correctional Administrators.
Hobbs holds a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he is a part-time instructor.
