Former Trojan Baseballer, Wife Co-Chair Alumni’s “Taste of Latin America”
He came to Arkansas to play first base for the UALR Trojans. Four years after graduating with a degree in liberal studies and earning a law degree from the Bowen School, Leo Monterrey is back on campus, co-chairing the Alumni Association’s annual scholarship fundraiser, Taste of Latin America, an evening of food, fun, and fellowship scheduled for March 2009.
“Mark your calendars and get your tickets. I guarantee you will experience a different side of the Latino community,” Monterrey said of the event he and his wife, Crissy Monterrey ’06, are planning.
Like her husband, Crissy earned a law degree at UALR’s William H. Bowen School of Law. She is a lawyer at Mitchell, Williams, Selig, Gates, and Woodyard PLLC. He is a partner at the Hernandez Law Firm, practicing immigration, family, criminal, and property law.
“I decided to attend law school because of the need for Hispanic attorneys in Arkansas,” he said. “Very often the Latino community goes unrepresented in our judicial system, and I felt like I could make a difference.”
Monterrey, named by El Latino to the newspaper’s Quién es Quién (Who’s Who) list, said he and his wife hope to raise $100,000 for Alumni Association scholarships with the help of the Taste of Latin America event.
This year, alums and friends will be invited to become patrons of the annual event for a $300 contribution, receiving four complimentary tickets. Supporters can also be rising patrons for $100, receiving two tickets.
“Leo and Crissy are excited to lead this effort that can impact the lives of current students and those who have yet to realize the dream of a college education,” said Christian O’Neal, director of the UALR Alumni Association. “Call them at (501) 688-8884 and let the fiesta begin.”
UALR’s sixth annual “Taste of…” alumni scholarship fundraiser will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009, at the Bailey Alumni Center. Tickets are $30 per person. Visit ualr.edu/alumni for more details and ticket information.
