Dr. Terry “El Guapo’ Richard has been on the faculty at UALR for twenty years and is presently a Full Professor within the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology. He has served as chairperson of the department for nine of those twenty years and for the years 2000-2002 was the Coordinator of the Graduate Gerontology Program. He arrived in Arkansas as a Comtian missionary sociologist to preach to the educationally challenged students within the state of Arkansas . While at UALR he has published a variety of articles related to issues of thanatology, race and ethnic relations, teaching sociology and third world development trends.

Terry received his Ph.D. in Sociology with a minor in Anthropology from North Texas University. The M.A. was granted in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin . He is actively involved with the League of United Latin American Citizens and various Race Relations Boards in the State of Arkansas. He is a world traveler having lived for extended periods in Mexico, France and Guatemala. He speaks Southern English, habla bien Espanol con un dialecto de Tejas porque su madre hablaba los dos idiomas y il parle un peu de la patois acadienne (Cajun French) parce que son grandparents ont parle’ francaise aussi.

His hobbies include tennis, golf and occasional forays to the Tunica casinos to support the Mississippi economy.
