Shannon Richardson was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on September 10, 1974. She completed her BA in Sociology and Anthropology from UALR in 1997 and her MA from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 2000. Following graduate school, she returned to UALR to teach. She is currently an Instructor of Sociology and Anthropology, teaching classes such as Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Sociocultural Change, Gender Studies, Social Problems, and others. One of the key components in Shannon’s classes involves examining the processes through which we all “do” culture; the set of institutional and ideological practices that shape it; and the existing processes through which inequities are identified and transformed. By employing a cross-cultural, holistic approach, students explore how the idea of self intersects with issues of cultural ownership, religion, class, and race.

Her professional interests range from tribal studies (with an emphasis on political and religious systems) to primate studies (with an emphasis on comparative anatomy and captivity-induced aggression in chimpanzees). Shannon serves on several committees at UALR and is involved in many organizations and activities off-campus including the Primate Enrichment Program at the Little Rock Zoo, The Name Campaign, Invisible Children’s Network, and awareness support for Children’s Hope International.

Shannon adopted her daughter, Anna Li, from China in June of 2005.
