Masculine Projection
Exhibition by Joshua Brinlee

Windgate Center of Art + Design | Small Gallery
Level 1
Joshua Brinlee, Juror

The exhibition Masculine Projections by Joshua Brinlee features photographic self-portraits created with digital imaging, which mimic the traditional portraiture and painting tradition.  This work will be on display in the Small Gallery on level 1 of the Windgate Center March 29 – April 27, 2018.

Societal expectations dictate that men should be stoic and dominant projections of virility, especially in the South. If you fail to meet these expectations of masculinity you are characterized as weak, unmanly, and effeminate. Brinlee explores the absurdity of these expectations in his current series, Masculine Projections. Stereotypical archetypes of men appropriated from Tumblr are projected onto the artist, which he then photographs.

Joshua Brinlee currently teaches at the University of Mississippi. He is originally from Morgan City, Louisiana, but was raised in Franklin, Tennessee.  He has lived and worked in Memphis, Tennessee for the past sixteen years and received his BFA and MFA from Memphis College of Art and Design. He also participated in the New York Studio Residency Program, which is a project that stems from the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design.
