UALR Art Department “Fabulous Friday”
The UALR art department hosts two “Fabulous Fridays” each academic year, one in the fall and one in the spring term. The purpose of the events is to ensure that Arkansas high school juniors and seniors who are seriously interested in majoring in art have a good understanding about the opportunities available at UALR. Letters about the events and registration forms are sent to Arkansas high school art teachers in September. The high school art teachers are responsible for returning student registration forms, signed by a parent or guardian, to the UALR art department. High school art teachers are encouraged to attend Fabulous Friday with their students, if their schedules permit. While groups of students from various high schools usually comprise Fabulous Friday sessions, individual registered students also participate. If a parent or guardian would like to attend with the student, they are welcome to do so. The art department would appreciate knowing in advance if a parent will be attending.
Visiting students are on the UALR campus from approximately 8 AM to 3 PM. Students are divided into two groups, and each group experiences the same activities although each group follows a slightly different schedule. University art faculty teach “mini” classes, about 40 to 50 minutes long. Studio experiences are some combination of the following areas: ceramics, drawing, fiber arts, furniture design, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Visiting students also have an art history session, and they tour the university art galleries. Lunch is provided for the visiting students, faculty and guests. High school students receive information about UALR, the art department, and scholarships.
We hope that by inviting students to the UALR campus, introducing them to studio experiences in a college setting, and meeting our faculty, high school students will have more information to make one of the most important decisions in their life, the decision to continue their education. To this end UALR, faculty, staff and current students devote a significant amount of time and resources to preparing for each Fabulous Friday event.
