This study abroad course will provide a historical and cultural survey of the art and architecture of the ancient Maya with a specific focus on the Classic and Late Classic sites of Palenque, Bonampak, and Yaxchilan. We will begin by studying the formative Olmec culture or “mother culture” of Mesoamerica in Villahermosa (location of colossal portraits). Other excursions include Agua Azul, Pomona, and Tonina. Students will be expected to recognize the stylistic characteristics of various sites visited, understand the technical and conceptual processes by which objects were created, and analyze the role ancient Maya art played within the religious and political community.
Program Cost $1,950.00 includes:
- roundtrip airfare,
- in country transportation (including boat to Yaxchilan),
- entrance fees to museums and sites,
- accommodations,
- all breakfasts, and two lunches and dinners.
