Ordinary Materials - Extraordinary Jewelry:
Sponsored by the Windgate Foundation
Dates: Sat. & Sun. Mar. 9th & 10th
Times: 9:30am - 5:30pm
FREE WORKSHOP
(Maximum is 18 students so register early!)
Description:
Just about any material has potential for use in jewelry making. Using repurposed materials such as tin cans provides options for introducing color, imagery and text into your work. Demonstrations will include tools and techniques for working with a variety of materials with a focus on tin cans, steel wire, and found objects. Participants will learn to select, alter, form and join dissimilar elements to achieve a unified design, transforming the ordinary into extraordinary.
NOTE: Though no prior skills are necessary, a basic understanding of silver soldering and cold connection methods are strongly recommended for this workshop.
Materials & Supplies:
• Tin cans – 10 or more and preferably those with colorful labels painted on the surface. Good sources for tin cans are thrift stores, eBay (search on vintage tin cans) junk stores and recycling bins.
• Found objects – shells, rusty washers, photographs, personal mementos, old broken jewelry, stones or anything you find interesting.
• Tool kit with your favorite metal working tools plus these essentials: jeweler’s saw, needle files, center punch, steel bench block, dividers, 6” metal ruler, soldering supplies, notebook/sketchbook, safety glasses, small hand towel, chasing hammer, riveting hammer, chain nose pliers (2) and tin snips, if you have them. (Many tools will be available for communal use.)
