SUMMER II COURSES (May 23 - June 27, 2011):
ARST2318 Designing with New Technologies
MTWR 1:00pm - 3:15pm • Instructor: Tom Clifton
Problems in design utilizing new technologies for the visual artist. Emphasis on computer aided imagery. (3 credit hours)
ARST 4315 and 5315: APD/Digital Painting
MTWR 9:00am - 11:15am • Instructor: Tom Clifton
Prerequisite: ARST 2318 or consent of the instructor.
In this course students will be instructed in the use of Photoshop’s painting capabilities utilizing the Wacom tablet and stylus to create the appearance of real media art work. Instruction will include the use of the Wacom tablet, utilizing the brushes included in Photoshop, creating your own brushes and downloading and installing custom brushes. Additional instruction will include the use of blending modes, adjustment layers and color layering. Course will be taught in demonstration and project format. Project topics will include painting from still lifes, use of photographic sources and the creation of personal imagery. (3 credit hours)

ARST 3340 Graphic Design 1
MTWR 8:00am - 10:15am • Instructor: Marjorie Williams-Smith
Prerequisites: ARST 1310, 1315, 2310. Welcome to the exciting world of visual communication. The graphic designer’s job is to convey a message to an audience. Thus effective graphic design can impact our world. This course will introduce students to the design process, from initial sketches to the computer comprehensive. Visual communication problems will be solved using the elements of art and principles of design. (3 credit hours)
ARST 4315 APD/Cascading Style Sheets
MTWR 11:00am - 1:15pm • Instructor: Kevin Cates
Prerequisites: ARST2318 or consent of instructor. Focus on the creation of functional and aesthetic web sites using Cascading Style Sheets. Emphasis is on technical proficiency through in-class demonstrations and conceptual projects along with relevant usability and coding standards. (3 credit hours)

ARST 3380 Illustration 1

Prerequisites: ARST 1310, 1315, 2310; or consent of instructor. Instruction in the professional illustration field. Discussion topics include working process, conceptualization methods for assignments and topics in contemporary illustration. Projects cover hands-on instruction in a variety of traditional media. (3 credit hours)
ARST 3385 Vector Graphics

Prerequisite: ARST 2318 or consent of the instructor. A study of computer illustration software covering the most popular vector illustration programs in use today. Emphasis on aesthetic judgement and technical proficiency in developing works of art for illustration and design portfolio. (3 credit hours)
ARST 4340 Graphic Design 3

Prerequisite: ARST 3341 or consent of instructor. Instruction in varied aspects of graphic design theory, with emphasis on visual communication, client restrictions, and deadlines. (3 credit hours)
