Scholarships

A wide variety of scholarships and awards are available to UALR students with an emphasis in studio art, art education, art history, and applied design. Some scholarships are limited to specific emphasis areas or students of a particular year level, while others are open to all art emphases. Award amounts vary depending on available funds and the strength of the applicant’s accomplishments. Typically, awards range from $1000 to $6,000. During 2011 the Department of Art awarded over $92,000 in scholarships and awards.
With any scholarship or assistantship please consult financial services on how the award will affect your financial aid, before accepting the award.
If you wish to apply for a scholarship, use the fillable pdf application and make sure you provide all information. Partial applications will not be considered. All applications must be accompanied by the support materials outlined below.
Eligible Students
In order to receive an Art Department Scholarship, student must be a declared art major, enrolled in art courses and be degree-seeking at UALR (see below for specific requirements).
For the 2013-2014 Academic Year we are awarding scholarships in all emphasis areas for the following academic standings:
- Incoming Freshmen (under 12 hrs completed)
- Sophomores (30-60 hrs)
- Juniors (60-90 hrs)
- Seniors (over 90 hrs)
We are also awarding scholarships to Graduate Students in Studio Art.
Endowed Scholarship Funds
The Joan R. Taylor Scholarships is a competitive scholarship awarded to full-time art majors pursuing a degree in art history, studio art, art education, or applied design at UALR. Based upon artistic accomplishment, financial need, and academic success.
The Lori Grimes Memorial Scholarship is a competitive scholarship awarded to full or half-time art majors pursuing a degree in art history, studio art, art education, or applied design at UALR. No student shall receive the award more than once. Based upon artistic accomplishment.
The Friends of the Arts Scholarship is a competitive scholarship provided by the organization, Friends of the Arts, for a declared art major pursuing a degree in art history, studio art, art education, or applied design at UALR. Based upon artistic accomplishment.
The Jerry Arrowood Memorial Scholarship is a competitive scholarship available to an Art History major in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Based on accomplishments in the area of Art History.
The Windgate Foundation Scholarship is a competitive scholarship awarded to full-time art majors. Will be awarded to first-time, in-coming*, full-time or half-time freshmen students pursuing a degree in art history, studio art, art education, or applied design at UALR. Renewable for a maximum of four consecutive years upon passing annual portfolio reviews. Based upon artistic accomplishment.
The Judith Anne Wrappe Endowed Scholarship honors the memory of Judith Anne Wrappe, a promising young artist and former UALR student whose life and all of its creativity was cut short by tragedy. A competitive scholarship awarded to full-time or half-time art majors based upon artistic accomplishment The scholarship is awarded to a rising senior pursuing a degree in art history, studio art, art education, or applied design at UALR.
The Virginia Mitchell Bailey Memorial Visual Arts Scholarship for Graduate Students is a competitive scholarship and will be awarded to a full-time or part-time graduate student pursuing a degree in studio art. Based upon artistic accomplishment.
The Dr. Virginia Pitts Rembert Award
The Eleanor Orts Francis Award
The Wilma and Jack Diner Scholarship and Purchase Award is selected from the juried Student Competitive Exhibition held in Gallery I each spring.
*First-time incoming Freshmen are students who will enter the University with Freshman status having completed less than 12 hrs of University or Community College level courses.
General Criteria Required
- Must be a declared full- or half-time degree seeking student pursuing a degree in the Department of Art (some scholarships are only available to specific emphasis areas).
- Students must be in “Good” academic standing with the university.
- Recipients in art history must show evidence of strong academic accomplishments through two separate research papers.
- Recipients in studio art and applied design must show evidence of strong artistic accomplishment through a visual portfolio of their own artwork.
- Recipients in art education must show strong academic and/or strong artistic accomplishment through two separate research papers or a visual portfolio of their own artwork or a combination of one research paper and a visual portfolio.
- Recipients shall write a formal letter of appreciation to the Donors, which shall serve as their official notice of acceptance of the scholarship.
- Recipients must participate in a yearly scholarship exhibition in the University Galleries coordinated by the Gallery Director.
Use of Scholarships
Scholarships may be used for tuition and fees, books and art materials for the academic year of 2013-2014, excluding summer. The scholarships will be awarded in two installments with the first half paid into student accounts at the beginning of the fall semester and the second at the beginning of the spring semester. Students must remain eligible in order to receive the second installment.
Selection Process
The art department scholarship committee will identify candidates based on the Recipient Qualifications and Application Materials stated below. The entire Department of Art faculty will make the final selection. If no qualified candidates are identified, funds will be retained for use in the next academic year.
Notification
The Scholarship award winners will be notified by the end of April and are required to be present at the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences award ceremony in May.
Materials Required for Application:
Applicants will need to supply the following materials in order to be considered for the 2013-2014 Department of Art Scholarships:
- A completed 2013-2014 Scholarship Application Form.
- An unofficial college transcript. (BOSS transcript) OR an official high school transcript for first-time incoming Freshmen* applicants.
- Examples of work pertaining to degree sought.

For an Art History applicant:
- Two typed research papers, 10-15 pages of text each (5-10 pages if applying as an incoming Freshman). The first paper must be on an art history topic. The second should preferably be on an art history topic, but another humanities topic is acceptable. Include supplemental materials such as illustrations and bibliography. These pages are not included in the text. Submit as hard copy and on a CD.
For a Studio Art or Applied Design applicant:
- A CD containing a PowerPoint presentation of 8-10 works. Each work may show more than one view or additional detail images. However, the number of images submitted cannot be more than 20.
- Typed image list. The image list must be in the order of presented materials and must include the following information: artist name, title of work, medium used, size, and date of completion.
For an Art Education Applicant:
- Two typed research papers, 10-15 pages of text each (5-10 pages if applying as an incoming Freshman). The first paper must be on an art history topic.
