Freshman Merit Scholarship in Art & Art History
APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 6, 2009
The UALR Freshman Merit Scholarship in Art and Art History will be awarded to an in-coming, full-time freshman student pursuing a degree in Art History, Studio Art, Art Education, or Applied Design at UALR. The award will be $3,000 for the 2008-2009 academic year, excluding summer.
Use:
The scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, books, and art materials only.
Recipient Qualifications:
The recipient of the UALR Freshman Merit Scholarship in Art and Art History must show evidence of academic accomplishments within a high school transcript.
A Studio Art recipient must show evidence of strong artistic accomplishments through a visual portfolio of their own artwork.
Art History recipients must show evidence of strong writing skills through a written essay.
The recipient must be highly recommended by his or her high school art teacher(s). If the recipient graduated high school more than three years ago, they will need to be highly recommended by an employer.
Selection Process:
The art department scholarship committee will identify candidates based on the Recipient Qualifications and Application Materials stated above. The entire Department of Art faculty will make the final selection. If no qualified candidates are identified, funds will be retained for use in the next academic year.
Notification:
Applicants will be notified by the end of March.
Materials Required for Application:
Applicants will need to supply the following materials in order to be considered for the UALR Freshman Merit Scholarship in Art and Art History (additional requirements of Studio Art and Art History applicants follow this list):
- A completed UALR Freshman Merit Scholarship in Art and Art History application form.
- An official high school transcript.
- One letter of reference from the applicant’s high school art teacher is required, or if applicant graduated high school more than three years ago, a letter of reference by an employer.
- Examples of work pertaining to degree sought. See below for specific requirements for Art History, Studio Art, Art Education, or Applied Design.
- A 100 word typed personal statement.
For an Art History applicant:
- A previously written art history essay or an essay in another subject is required in hard copy.
For an applicant in Studio Art, Art Education, or Applied Design:
- A CD portfolio of eight to ten works.
- Typed image list. The image list must be in the order of presented materials and must include the following information: artist name, title of work, medium used, size, and date of completion.
Scholarship Exhibition Requirements
Scholarship recipients are required to participate in the fall scholarship exhibition to be held in one of the Department of Art galleries. Please be prepared to submit one or two recent exemplary artworks and coordinate with gallery director Brad Cushman.
