Windgate Foundation Scholarship for Art & Art History for Freshman

APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 6, 2009

The Windgate Foundation Scholarship Fund for Art and Art History will be awarded to a first time, in-coming, full-time or part-time* freshman student pursuing a degree in art history, studio art, art education, or applied design at UALR.

The Windgate Foundation Scholarship will be awarded annually in the amount of $3000.00. The Windgate Foundation Scholarship recipients’ awards will be renewed only if the recipients successfully complete the renewal process and maintain eligibility.* The scholarship will be awarded to a recipient for a maximum of 4 consecutive years.

Use of Scholarship Funds:
The funds will be used to help cover in-state tuition, general fees, and average cost of books and supplies for fall and spring semesters only. Housing costs are not covered in award.

Windgate Foundation Scholarship recipients will need to consult financial services on how the award will affect their financial aid, before accepting the award.


Recipient Qualifications:

  • The recipient of Windgate Foundation Scholarship in Art and Art History must show evidence of academic excellence through the submission of a high school transcript.
  • A studio art recipient must show evidence of strong artistic accomplishments through a visual portfolio of their own artwork.
  • Art History recipients must show evidence of strong writing skills through a written essay.
  • The recipient must be recommended by his or her high school art teacher(s). If the recipient has been out of school for more than three years, they must obtain a recommendation from an employer.

Materials Required for Application:

  • A completed UALR Freshman Scholarship in Art and Art History application form.
  • An official high school transcript.
  • One letter of reference from the applicant’s high school art teacher is required, or if applicant graduated high school more than three years ago, a letter of reference by an employer.
  • Examples of work pertaining to degree sought.
  • A 100 word typed personal statement.

For an art history applicant
Written art history essay or an essay in another subject is required.

For an applicant in studio art, art education, or applied design:

  • A CD portfolio of eight to ten works.
  • Typed image list. The image list must be in the order of presented materials and must include the following information: artist name, title of work, medium used, size, and date of completion.

Selection & Awarding Process

  • The UALR Department of Art Scholarship and Awards Committee will identify candidates based on the Recipient Qualifications and Application Materials stated above.
  • The Department of Art faculty will make the final selections. If no qualified candidates are identified, funds will be retained for use in the next academic year).
  • Upon the faculty’s decision, an award letter, scholarship requirements, contract, and a return envelope will be mailed to potential recipient.
  • The student must return a letter of acceptance and signed contract, which states they have read and understand the conditions of maintaining the scholarship award.

Windgate Foundation Scholarship recipients will need to consult financial services on how the award will affect their financial aid, before accepting the award. (ALREADY STATED ABOVE)

Scholarship Exhibition Requirements
Scholarship recipients are required to participate in the fall scholarship exhibition to be held in one of the Department of Art galleries. Please be prepared to submit one or two recent exemplary artworks and coordinate with gallery director Brad Cushman.


Rules & Eligibility for Maintaining Scholarship

  • Student must be enrolled full-time (12+ hours per semester) or 3/4-Time (9-11 hours per semester).
  • Student must enroll as a traditional freshman, with no previous enrollments at UALR or other colleges and universities. Transfer students will not be considered for this award.
  • Student must be a declared studio, applied design, art education, or art history major at time of enrollment.
  • Student is required to enroll in a minimum of 3 art courses per academic year
    (All additional credits must fulfill core or degree requirements).
  • If student falls below 9 hours per semester, student will forfeit their award.
  • Student must remain in good academic standing with the university and be registered as full- or 3/4-time student for the duration of the award period.
  • Student must successfully complete all course work.
  • Students must complete the renewal process.
  • Student must be advised through their designated art department advisor.
  • If a student fails to maintain eligibility, the remainder of the student award will be placed back into the account, or be used for additional scholarships as determined by the scholarship and awards committee. Total number of awards shall not exceed 8 individual renewable awards at any given time.

Renewal Process

  1. Submit portfolio and application mid-spring.
  2. Interview (defense of work - request for continuance)
  3. Recommendation to Faculty - approval or discontinuance based upon the students portfolio, interview, and their ability to maintain eligibility.
  4. A letter of continuance or discontinuance will be mailed to the scholarship applicant.
  5. The reapplication and renewal process will take place each consecutive spring semester for the first 3 years.
