General Information

Discover Interpreting logoInterpreters are professionals who function as linguistic and cultural mediators between individuals who are hearing and individuals who are deaf, deaf-blind, or hard of hearing. To learn more about the profession of interpreting, see Discover Interpreting.

Interpreter education is accomplished through a learning model that is developmental, sequential and spiral within a task-analysis approach. Student learning is facilitated through access to a multi-media ASL lab.

UALR’s Interpreter Education Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education.

UALR’s Interpreter Education Program includes second language learning, foundations in deaf culture, deaf-blindness, beginning to advanced methods in interpretation, electives, and core requirements. Priority is placed on acquisition of requisite knowledge, values, and competencies by balancing second language learning and interpretation theory with practical applications so that candidate proficiencies are aligned with national interpreting standards. UALR abides by program standards set forth by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education. You may apply to the program by following general admission procedures for the university and contacting any faculty member in the Interpreter Education Program.
