Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
• When can I declare social work as my major?
At any time once you are admitted to UALR. Once you declare social work as your major, you will be assigned a faculty advisor who will meet with you each semester to help you determine what courses to take.
• Do I have to apply to the BSW Program and if so, when can I do this?
Yes, you have to apply to the BSW Program. You can do this after you’ve taken at least 53 credits, 40 of which must be in the core curriculum; have taken Intro to Social Work (SOWK 1300), Intro to Sociology (SOCI 2300), and Psychology and the Human Experience (PSYC 2300) with at least a C grade in all courses and a 2.5 GPA in the three courses. In addition, you must have at least a 2.5 overall GPA. Applications are accepted in the spring of every year and students are only admitted in the fall semester.
• How many credits are required for a BSW?
124 credits. This is the same as is required for most degrees at UALR. Please contact the BSW Program at (501) 569-3046 or click here for more specific information regarding BSW requirements.
• Do you require that students complete an internship?
Yes. It must be completed in your senior year and consists of approximately 15 hours per week for both the fall and spring semesters. We have very few internships on nights and weekends so you need to be available during regular working hours to complete it.
• Can I work and go to school at the same time?
Many students do but they also find it difficult during their senior year when they are required to be in their internships and must take a class on Tuesdays from 3 – 5 pm that is required in conjunction with the internship.
• How big are your classes?
The biggest social work classes are usually no more than 25 students.
• Do you have online and night classes?
Right now, we offer 2 classes during the junior year online. We offer one section of each class at night except for the class you must take with your internship.
