Music Professor Works on Children's Opera

UALR professor of music and university composer Dr. Robert Boury is writing his second children’s opera, “Seastruck,” which will be performed by the Chotard Institute in May 2011.

“Seastruck,” consists of one act and follows a group of female pirates on their quest to escape a mysterious island.

Boury said, “Our three sailors think they are daring pirates, but they are being kidnapped. The captain was enchanted into the figurehead of the ship and can’t leave it. So she steers them through a hurricane to an island.”

This is the second children’s opera Boury has written, and his fifth opera overall. “Grandmother Spider,” his first children’s opera, was performed by the Chotard Institute in May 2009.

Boury is composing “Seastruck” with the support of a UALR Summer Research Grant.

The Chotard Institute of Music was established in July 2007 to train aspiring young classical singers to enter college as skilled musicians.
