CAHSS Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity Symposium                                                                               Tuesday, April 24, 2012
1-3pm

Request for Applications

The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences announces the 2012 Awards for Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity.  The awards are for projects completed during the 2011-12 academic year by undergraduate students within the college. We invite faculty to encourage students to compete for the awards.  The Symposium involves a two-step process: (1) submission of a proposal, (2) presentation of the project at the Symposium by those selected.

Applications should include an abstract of the research project or a summary of the creative project (up to two double-spaced pages, 250-500 words). Supporting materials such as a bibliography of works consulted, brief examples of past work (poems, stories, etc.), reproductions of visual art, photographs, DVDs, or recordings may be submitted as needed.  Applications must also include a letter of support from a faculty member assisting with the project and contact information for both the applicant and faculty mentor.

We hope to recognize students from each area of the College: the Arts, the Humanities, and the Social Sciences. The AHSS Undergraduate Research Team will evaluate proposals based on originality/creativity, a well-defined focus, documentation of research (as appropriate to the discipline) or creative activity (scope, thoroughness, appropriate methods), organization, and presentation (clarity, persuasiveness). If the committee believes multiple proposals have equal merit, students who have not previously presented at the Symposium will have priority. Those whose proposals are selected will have the opportunity to present their work in formats appropriate to their disciplines, such as papers, presentations, exhibits, or performances, at the Symposium on April 24, 2012.

A cash prize will be awarded to the student whose symposium presentation is judged to be of the highest quality.  Other cash prizes and recognition will be given to distinguished projects.

Deadline for applications:  March 16, 2012.

Please note that this event is separate from the University’s Undergraduate Research Expo (scheduled for April 16, 2012).  Students are encouraged to apply for both events.
