Updated - Renowned Paleoanthropologist Leakey to Give Public Lecture at UALR
UALR will host Richard Leakey, famous paleoanthropologist, environmentalist, and author as part of the Winthrop Rockefeller Distinguished Lectures Series on Wednesday, October 8, 4:30 pm at the University Theatre for the Performing Arts on the UALR campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Thirty years ago, together with a team from the National Museums of Kenya (NMK), Leakey led the first expedition to Koobi Fora in Northern Kenya. He coordinated NMK field expeditions and significant finds were made, including early Stone Age tools dating back 1.9 million years, evidence of early members of the genus Homo. The extraordinary discovery of the nearly complete 1.6 million year old skeleton of the “Nariokotome Boy” (or “Turkana Boy”), a Homo erectus youth, was undoubtedly the most important.
