Summer 2018 CALS Summer Research Fellowship Call for Proposals

Purpose & Eligibility

The purpose of the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences Summer Research Fellowship is to provide opportunities for faculty and promote scholarship within the college.

Only full-time tenured and tenure track faculty who anticipate employment in the UA Little Rock College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences during the 2018-2019 academic year are eligible to apply. Those who received a CALS Summer Research Fellowship in the past year are ineligible. Projects may be free-standing or part of a larger research or artistic endeavor.

Funding Limits

Up to $12,000 is available in total funding, with up to $4,000 for each category of departments which comprise the college (i.e., Arts, Letters, and Sciences). No more than two projects will be funded from each category of Arts, Letters, and Sciences. The maximum amount of any single award will be $4,000 to be used for research expenses (e.g. travel, books, computer equipment, supplies, etc.) subject to university and state purchasing regulations. Estimates of these research expenses must be indicated on the application form, and actual expenses must be documented at the end of the granting period. Equipment and books purchased with fellowship money will become the property of the university.

Applications

Applications are limited to three (3) pages single spaced (not including abstract, budget, and curriculum vitae), and should be written in language understandable by non-specialists. The criteria for evaluation of grant applications is as follows (click here to download the complete evaluation rubric).

  1. Completeness and clarity of the funding application
  2. Scholarly and/or artistic originality and overall impact of the project
  3. Feasibility of the project
  4. Long-term prospects of the project (e.g., future funding, publications, shows/performances)
  5. Contribution to the applicant’s scholarly/artistic career
  6. Clearly stated and detailed budget
Application Outline
  1. Project Abstract (500 words or fewer)
  2. Project Overview
    • Background and Statement of Problem
    • Project Purpose, Objectives, and/or Specific Aims
    • Methodology and Outcome Measures
    • Long-Term Prospects
  3. Project Budget
    • If faculty wishes to use the funds in a way other than stated in the application, permission must be obtained first from the dean’s office.
    • Faculty should include information about matching funding from other sources, where applicable.
  4. Disclosure of Financial Interests in Project
  5. One-page curriculum vitae, including relevant professional activities.

Award Requirements

Funding recommendations will be made by the CALS Faculty Research and Professional Development Committee. Successful applicants will be required to provide the Dean’s office with a follow-up report, as well as make themselves available for a public presentation of the results of the project. Recipients of awards must follow IRB rules and are responsible for obtaining approval should such be required.

Deadlines:

Faculty submit applications online: April 6, 2018
Funding award winners notified before: April 27, 2018
All awarded funds must be spent before: August 30, 2018
Recipients’ follow-up reports are due in the Dean’s office: October 1, 2018
