I am a junior Middle School Math and Science major scheduled to graduate in 2011. I currently work full-time, attend school part-time, and am actively involved in a community theatre group called Prolific Thoughts, which consists of poets, singers, actors, and playwrights. I also participate in a theatre production called "Freedom" in which I play a lead role. I currently volunteer as the program coordinator for a community youth initiative program called Life Skills for Youth. This program targets disadvantaged youth and equips them with life skills, academic skills, and financial skills for adulthood.

My dream, goal, and focus are to become a Middle School Math and Science teacher. My goal is not to just attain a teaching license, but to acquire knowledge that will assist me in becoming a phenomenal teacher. I desire to make a difference in today's students. I see today's students in my neighborhood and in each child's face I mentor in the community program in which I am heavily involved. This not only motivates me, but it instills a yearning to learn all that I can so I will be the best. I plan to enhance our school system's effectiveness in the classroom and to touch the lives of our future doctors, lawyers, and teachers.

Sidney Harris, an American journalist for the Chicago Daily News, stated "The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows." The Ledbetter Non-Traditional Endowed Scholarship will help turn my mirrors of self doubt into windows of opportunities. You have not only affected me through your generosity, but you have also affected future generations. As we all know, attending college requires money, time, and dedication. The Ledbetter Scholarship will assist me in all three. Simply by your investment in me, it guarantees that I will be able to instill valuable tools into many generations to come. There aren't any words that can truly express the appreciation and gratitude that is imbedded in my heart, so I will simply say "Thank You."

Sincerely,

Katina White
