Interpretation Education

The Interpreter Education Program (IEP) faculty and staff welcome your calls and inquiries into the program. Please call to arrange an onsite visit, university tour, and meeting with an advisor. The IEP offers two degree programs:

Students seeking admission to the IEP will need to meet with an advisor within our program. Your major advisor will also help you select a minor if one is required or desired. Make an appointment today at ualr.edu/advising/major.

Students who want to be admitted to the AS degree program must achieve a grade of “B” or better in ASL I. To declare the BA major, students must achieve a grade of “B” or better in ASL II.

New students and transfer students may apply online through the UALR Office of Recruitment webpage. In addition to sending official transcripts to the university, transfer students should send unofficial transcripts to the Interpreter Education Program Coordinator to determine course equivalents and placement within the program curriculum.

Program Overview

Interpreters are professionals who function as linguistic and cultural mediators between individuals who are hearing and individuals who are deaf, deaf-blind, or hard of hearing. Interpreter education is accomplished through a learning model that is developmental, sequential and spiral within a task-analysis approach.

UALR’s program includes second language learning, foundations in deafness, deaf-blindness, and deaf culture, beginning to advanced methods in interpretation, electives, and core requirements. Priority is placed on the acquisition of requisite knowledge, values, and competencies by balancing second language learning and interpretation theory with practical applications so that candidate proficiencies are aligned with national, professional and state standards. UALR abides by program standards set forth by the Conference of Interpreter Trainers.
