“Dress For Success” Guidelines

When thinking about your appearance for career fairs, be conservative. This is an opportunity to meet with employers, make connections and find employment. It is better to appear more conservative than too unprofessional.

General Rules for Positive Professional First Impressions

  • Make sure your hair is neatly trimmed and styled.
  • Have your clothes dry-cleaned and /or pressed.
  • Polish your shoes and check the heels.
  • Check for runs or holes in your hosiery or socks.
  • Leave your book bag in your car or room.
  • Carry a portfolio with copies of your resume, paper, and pen.

************************************************
DO NOT wear blue jeans, athletic wear, T-shirts, tube tops, shorts, flip-flops or tennis shoes.

************************************************

Men

  • A two-piece suit is preferred by employers.
  • Second best option is a long-sleeved shirt, dress slacks tie and belt.
  • Third and least preferred option is a button down or polo shirt and dress pants with belt.
  • Don’t wear a loud and crazy tie. While ties allow you to show some individuality, you don’t want to go overboard and be off putting.
  • Wear nice polished shoes and socks long enough to cover any skin when sitting.

Women

  • A suit with slacks or a knee-length skirt and a tailored blouse or shell is preferred.
  • Sweater set with a slacks or a knee-length or longer skirt is also appropriate.
  • Accessories and makeup should be conservative.
  • A good rule of thumb for jewelry is 2 pieces of earrings/necklace/bracelet and no more than one ring per hand.
  • Makeup should be day appropriate and more natural looking hues.
  • Revealing clothes showing excessive skin are inappropriate for a career fair.
