Summer Services at the Speech and Hearing Clinic

The UA Little Rock Speech and Hearing Clinic offers summer therapy services for persons of all ages. Our summer camps allow children to interact with peers and participate in fun, exciting activities while improving their communication skills. We also have group therapy opportunities for adults. Individual services for all ages are also available! We would be delighted to have you or your family member at our clinic.

Camp Can Read

This camp is designed to improve literacy skills in students who demonstrate difficulty with reading (decoding & word-identification) and spelling. This camp will focus heavily on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension utilizing a multi-sensory approach incorporating elements from programs such as LiPS, Seeing Stars, Visualizing/Verbalizing, and IMSE: Orton-Gillingham to build literacy skills in a fun and effective learning environment. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 3:1 ratio and supervised by two licensed and certified speech-language pathologists and/or reading specialist. Space is limited to 12 students.

Days: Tuesday/Thursday
Time: 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.

Required: Documentation of speech/language or achievement testing within 12 months or present level of performance


Camp Can Say (Articulation Group)

This group focuses on correct sound production and improving speech intelligibility for school-age children diagnosed with articulation or phonological disorders. Children receive therapeutic services using fun, innovative strategies utilizing a group service delivery model. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 2:1 ratio and supervised by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Space is limited to 6 students.

Camp Connect & Communicate (Language Group)

This group focuses on developing expressive and receptive language skills for school-age children diagnosed with expressive and/or receptive language disorders. Children will participate in various activities that are aligned with common core standards and designed to develop their academic language skills to facilitate success in the classroom setting. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 2:1 ratio and supervised by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Space is limited to 6 students.

Camp Cool Kids (Preschool Pragmatics Group)

This group focuses on early social interaction and communication skills for children who have difficulty with social aspects of language (i.e., making friends, engaging in appropriate play, etc.). Children will participate in fun, engaging activities centered around developing appropriate play and social skills in a structured environment. Children will practice social expectations, rituals, and routines to help them succeed in various social settings. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 2:1 ratio and supervised by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Space is limited to 6 students.

Camp Chitchat: Teen Pragmatics Group

This group is designed to provide a safe yet challenging environment within which a full range of relationship skills and competencies can develop in the context of games and fun activities. Activities are centered around topics appropriate for teens to help them learn to navigate within their environment, and the group stresses age-appropriate social interaction and social skills. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 2:1 ratio and supervised by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Space is limited to 6 students.

Chitchat: Adult Pragmatics Group

This group focuses on pre-vocational and workplace social skills for young adults that are necessary for success in the workforce. Young adults who have difficulty with social interaction such as developing and maintaining relationships (professional & personal) and self-advocating are encouraged to enroll. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 2:1 ratio and supervised by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Space is limited to 6 adults.

Camp Bumpy Buds: Stuttering Group

Fluency Group is a holistic stuttering treatment opportunity for school-aged children. In Fluency Group, peers share experiences about their stuttering obstacles and management, become educated about stuttering in order to become their own advocates, learn strategies to deal with affective components of their stuttering, and practice fluency-shaping and stuttering modification strategies with other group members. Services are provided by graduate student clinicians with a 2:1 ratio and supervised by a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Space is limited to 6 students.

Aphasia Group

This group is designed to provide education, support, and communicative practice to persons who have acquired language difficulties (e.g. speaking, understanding speech, reading, and writing) following brain damage (e.g. stroke, traumatic brain injury, etc.). This group allows individuals to practice their communication skills and share their experiences with others who are living with similar deficits.
