February Lunch and Learn

“Power and Language and Bias, Oh My!”

UALR’s Diversity Council will host our “Brown Bag Lunch and Learn” series event for the month of February on Thursday, February 6th from noon – 1:00 in room G of the Donaghey Student Center.  Our featured speaker for the month will be Sharon Downs, Director of the UALR Disability Resource Center.Clown video

Ms. Downs has actively promoted full inclusion and diversity for many years, and regularly presents on power and privilege dynamics, universal design, and micro-aggressions. The presentation – “Power and Language and Bias, Oh My!” – will cover life on the other side of stereotypes, the power of language, and our role in the power and privilege dynamic.  The brief video Clown will be shown, followed by a discussion of the film and its implications for all of us at UALR.

Please come out to participate in the discussion and meet the members of the council.  Our Brown Bag Lunch and Learn events will take place the first Thursday of each month and will feature presentations from faculty, staff, and students from across campus. Please encourage your students to also attend. Also, please be aware that you can submit a proposal for a future Brown Bag Lunch and Learn, or ask us a question any time.

Hope to see you then,

John W. Miller Jr.
Co-chair, UALR Diversity Council
