Madeline Burke, an undergraduate International Studies and Legal Studies major and Donaghey Scholar at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock College of Business, presented her research paper at the national Academy for Legal Studies in Business (ALSB) conference held on August 10, 2017 in Savannah, Georgia. She ultimately earned the top honor of Outstanding Student Research Paper. Founded in 1924, the Academy serves as the premier organization for the promotion of scholarly discovery in business law.
Under the direction of Dr. Casey Rockwell, Assistant Professor of Marketing, Ms. Burke dove deeply into her research entitled, “The 1920 Death on the High Seas Act: An Outdated and Ambiguous Admiralty Law Shielding Cruise Line Companies from Civil Liability”. Through this research, Ms. Burke evaluated the competitive advantages of the cruise line industry due to shielded tort liability. Other finalists in the category included participants from the University of Georgia, Indiana University, and Alama College (Michigan).
