Three business professors will be among the 21 honored at the 2013 UALR Faculty Excellence Awards Ceremony Friday, April 12, at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a ceremony in the concert hall, followed by a reception in the Bailey Alumni and Friends Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Research – Joseph R. Bell

Most economists would agree that the true essence of entrepreneurship – to define, invest, build, and repeat a successful business model – is what drives economic recovery.

As the primary driver behind the campus and community integrated Entrepreneurship Program, Professor Joseph R. Bell has applied that same outlook in the academic realm and produced a prolific amount of scholarly work since coming to UALR.

Public Service – Nancy Landrum

Recognized by Arkansas Business Publishing Group as a statewide Eco-Hero, Dr. Nancy Landrum, associate professor of management, is training sustainability-minded business professionals to lead through the next generation.

Landrum developed UALR’s first undergraduate and graduate courses in sustainable business practices, in which students engage in service learning projects. Some of the projects have included Seguku Women’s Association of Uganda Africa, marketing and business development to learn about the realities of working with an organization in an emerging economy; Arkansas Energy Office, research to identify funding sources for businesses to implement energy efficient projects; and the Sustainable Business Network of Central Arkansas, to profile the growing number of sustainable businesses.

Dr. Gaurav Kumar, associate professor of accounting, possesses that gift in the world of higher education and accounting: the ability to provide detailed and technical information about accounting rules and procedures, while also demonstrating how those rules relate to the larger, global accounting perspective.

Pradeep Sapkota, a UALR alumnus who co-authored a paper with Kumar submitted to the American Accounting Association, credits Kumar with helping him grasp the “broader picture” of accounting. “For example, what is so special about the double-entry bookkeeping system, where did it all start, what is its significance, and what value does it hold? Thanks to Dr. Kumar, my eyes have been opened, and I can really put things into perspective

At Acxiom Corp., where she has worked for more than a year as recruiting specialist, Welch identifies prospective candidates for the company to hire and coordinates interviews. Her job includes serving as the contact for UALR.

“As a graduate, I am honored to work so closely with faculty and students,” said Welch, who received a bachelor’s in business administration degree in management with an emphasis in human resource management in 2009. “This gives me the opportunity to stay connected and give back to my alma mater.”

The 2006 Homecoming Queen, Welch was a Chancellor’s Leadership Corps scholar and was involved in a number of residence hall and student programming committees, including the Student Government Association.

“My experience at UALR gave me the tools necessary to lead in any academic, professional, or social setting. Both the coursework through the College of Business and my involvement on campus were key in preparing me for the workforce,” she said.

Originally from Mounds, Ill., Welch attended Meridian High School, so she visited colleges in Illinois, Missouri, and Tennessee. During her senior year, she moved to Pine Bluff and graduated from Watson Chapel High School. “During my first visit to UALR in 2005, I was very impressed and excited about the campus and the future of UALR.

“I found out about the CLC scholarship during my tour at UALR. I had a week to apply before the deadline and called the Office of Recruitment every day with questions until I submitted. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Being awarded the CLC scholarship added icing on the cake,” added Welch.

She previously worked in sales at Hewlett-Packard Co. in Conway and as a community advis0r/leasing manager at Place Properties in Little Rock. She also interned at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLC in St. Louis.

Welch is a member of Central Arkansas Human Resources Association, Arkansas Association of Colleges and Employers, and Society for Human Resource Management.

What was your favorite class? Gender Studies – This class opened my eyes to the differences between males and females in various cultures and how leadership styles are perceived between the two in the workplace.

How do you show your Trojan spirit? By continuously wearing the first Trojan T-Shirt I owned. I bought it during the 2005-2006 season, and we had an AWESOME basketball season. I decided to call it the “lucky shirt.” Now I wear it to every basketball game I attend and refuse to throw it away.

What is your favorite UALR memory? Fall Welcome Weeks – As a freshman, it was my first impression, and every year after that I made sure to be a volunteer. It was very exciting to attend the activities and a great opportunity to meet students and faculty.

Complete this sentence: When I was a child, I always … Wanted to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. In grade school, I attended a community event hosted by members of the organization. It was awesome, and I remember thinking, “I can’t wait until I’m old enough to join.” Also, my favorite teacher and community leader was a member, and she left an outstanding impression on me. Joining the Mu Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in 2007 was a dream come true.

What one word would you use to describe yourself? Ambitious.

Dr. John R. Hall, associate dean for undergraduate studies in the UALR College of Business, is also a consultant with the Federal Reserve System through the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

He received B.S. and MBA degrees in finance from Florida State University and a Ph.D. in finance from Indiana University. As associate dean, he coordinates the Business Perspectives class, a freshman experience course to help students transition from high school to university living and studying.

In addition to teaching finance courses at UALR, Dr. Hall has created educational and training materials and consulted for the Federal Reserve System’s examiners for the past 15 years on a variety of topics, usually within the capital markets area. His most recent work has been an extensive online essentials course that sets out a comprehensive review of basic financial concepts from the yield curve through derivatives. Each summer, he teaches sections of a face-to-face course for examiners, Principles of Asset and Liability Management.

From his interactions with the Federal Reserve System, Dr. Hall brings a wealth of current, real-world banking knowledge back to his students and the central Arkansas business community.
