COB Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament

This year the College of Business launched a capital campaign with proceeds directed toward an endowment for the college. In addition, the George W. Donaghey Foundation provided a $500,000 challenge gift. This is an opportunity to generate funds to better serve our students by supporting programs such as:

• Student abroad courses to Germany and Costa Rica
• Student competitions such as the Microsoft Imagine Cup and the Donald W. Reynolds Governors Cup Business Plan
• Professional development workshops

College of Business Seeks Nominations for Alumni Awards

The UALR College of Business is seeking nominations for the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus and the Dean’s Award for Excellence. Recipients are recognized at the College’s awards luncheon Thursday, October 25.

Candidates for the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year:

· Must be a graduate of the UALR College of Business,

· Made a significant impact in a business or nonprofit organization

· Made a difference in the community and/or UALR

· Be available to attend the awards luncheon.

Candidates for the Dean’s Award for Excellence:

· Must be a graduate from the College of Business between 2002 and 2012

· Shown promise as a leader in the business or nonprofit community

· Be involved in the community and/or UALR

· Be available to attend the awards luncheon.

Cynthia Treadwell-McConnell is the Distinguished Alumna for 2011. She graduated from UALR with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1998 and an Executive MBA in 2002. Ms. Treadwell-McConnell is the president of Air Transport Services Group Inc.

Frank D. Scott, Jr. is the Dean’s Award for Excellence for 2011. Scott received an MBA in 20009. Scott is the Business Development Office and Commercial Lender for First Security Bank.

Lawmaker to Discuss Business Ownership

State Rep. Barry Hyde, D-Sherwood, will be the guest speaker at the UALR Finance and Economics Association at 2 pm. Thursday, March 15, in the Reynolds Business Center room 103, to discuss economic and legislative issues affecting Arkansas.

Serving his third term, Hyde is a voting member of 13 committees in the House and is chairman of four of these committees. He represents Arkansas on four different national committees working on matters of insurance and economic development.

He also is chief executive officer of Hydco, Inc., a commercial construction company that he opened 24 years ago.

The event is free and open to the public.

Business Forum Explores Health Care Reform

How will the national health care reform law affect consumers, employers, payers, and providers? That is the subject of a Business Forum Wednesday, March 7, that will include a panel of experts and a moot court preview of the issues that will be decided by the Supreme Court.

“Health Care Reform: What Does It Mean?” will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. in Salon A at the Peabody Little Rock hotel with the program at 5:30 p.m.

The UALR College of Business event is sponsored by Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield, Arkansas Mutual Medical Professional Liability Insurance, and Delta Dental of Arkansas in partnership with UALR William H. Bowen School of Law, Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Arkansas Business Publishing Group.

“We will begin with a preview of U.S. Supreme Court deliberations of the individual mandate to buy health insurance, with Dean John DiPippa of the Bowen School of Law leading colleagues in a brief moot court of this argument,” said Dr. Lawrence S. Powell, UALR’s Whitbeck Chair of Economics and Finance. “This will be followed by two expert panels discussing and answering questions about the effects of health care reform laws as provisions of health care reform legislation take effect.”

In addition to Powell and DiPippa, a diverse set of experts will address these issues from the perspectives of consumers, employers, health care providers, and public and private insurers. The panelists include:

Tide-to-Go Creator is Fall Dean’s Forum Speaker

Roy Sandbach, research fellow with Procter & Gamble, will be the fall 2011 College of Business Dean’s Forum featured speaker Oct. 24. One of Sandbach’s patents, Tide-to-Go, introduced in 2006 has become more than a $50 million dollar business.

Sandbach’s presentation, “Innovating for Billions,” will include how his company built billion dollar brands and the billions of people that represent the opportunity for businesses to grow, particularly those in China, India, and other populous developing countries.

The talk will cover the basics of Procter & Gamble’s innovation strategy to include the Tide-to-Go story. Additionally, Sandbach will cover the complications that relate to expansion of standard practices into the developing world. Invite

With patents on many new-to-the-world products, Professor Sandbach has worked in in research and development at Procter & Gamble for almost 30 years, with the majority in Frankfurt, Rome, and Brussels. His career has spanned the global range of Procter & Gamble product categories. His current interests are in the holistic development of new products, notably in the developing world.

In 2010, Sandbach was appointed visiting professor of creative design at Cranfield University’s School of Applied Sciences in the United Kingdom. He is also visiting professor of industrial design at Central St. Martin’s College of Art & Design in London, teaching innovation management both there and at Imperial College in London. He is the only working UK scientist with a professorship at a leading UK art and design college.

In northern England, he has championed the development of Design Network North, a vibrant community of designers, and has contributed to innovation management and MBA programs at Northumbria University Business School. Recently, Sandbach has been a key contributor to the development of a city-region innovation strategy for Manchester, the largest city in northern England.

He is a director of North Tyneside Learning Trust, a new collaboration between schools, universities, and employers with the aim of more formally providing coordinated inspiration and opportunity for all local schoolchildren. This is the largest learning trust in the UK.

EMBA Information Session

EMBA Information Session:

Arkansas Capital Corporation will host a UALR Executive MBA information session on Thursday, October 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The EMBA information session will provide prospective students with an overview of the program as well as an opportunity to visit informally with EMBA faculty and alumni.

About EMBA

Providing strong and successful leadership, identifying opportunities and solutions, and successfully navigating the complex global business landscape, are just a few of the daunting challenges facing today’s busy executives. The UALR Executive MBA program is an important part of the College of Business’ commitment to developing successful and responsible business leaders. The 13th Executive MBA cohort will be comprised of a carefully selected and diverse group of participants. The program helps build capacity for innovative and strategic approaches to complexities of the global business environment and the uncertainty of the global economy. The EMBA XIII cohort’s classes will meet Fridays and Saturdays on alternating weekends beginning in the Spring of 2012. The length of the EMBA program is 18 months.
