Banner 7 Release Notes

There are a number of changes for Banner 7. On this page you will find instructions for installing the new Banner client software, using Data Extract, and managing your Banner password.

Installation

In order to install software you must be the administrator or have administrator privileges on the PC.

Installation occurs automatically the first time you visit the Banner site: banner.ualr.edu. Microsoft Internet Explorer is the recommend browser for Windows, but Mozilla Firefox and Netscape should also work. Support for Apple Mac OS X has not been finalized yet.

Logging into Banner takes about 60 seconds to log in, and about 30-45 seconds to exit. After exiting, you will still have an open browser page that should also be closed.

Banner 7 requires a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or more.

The current Banner client icon will be reconfigured automatically to point to and launch Banner 7 at banner.ualr.edu.

Installation: Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE6)

  1. Open the browser and go to banner.ualr.edu.

You will be prompted to install a plugin called JInitiator.

  2. Click on the install bar at the top of the browser page to install the plugin.

After JInitiator is installed, the login page for browser should appear. In order to avoid closing a session of Banner, be sure to open a new browser window when visiting another web site (e.g., check your email, searching, etc.). You can also change your browser preferences to automatically do this for you:

    1. From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
    2. On the Advanced tab in the Browsing section, uncheck the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" option.
    3. Click the Apply button, then the OK button.
  3. Note: The newest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE7) is currently not compatible with Banner. Please do not install IE7 until the Banner vendor corrects this problem. You will be notified by email once this occurs.

Installation: Mozilla Firefox or Netscape

  1. Open the browser and go to banner.ualr.edu.

You will be prompted to install a plugin called JInitiator.

  2. After installation, close your browser.
  3. Copy the file NPJinit13118.dll from the JInitiator directory (C:\Program Files\Oracle\JInitiator 1.3.1.18\bin\) to one of the following directories:

    • Mozilla Firefox: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Plugins\
    • Netscape: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\Plugins\
This will register the JInitiator plugin with your browser.

  4. Open the browser and again go to banner.ualr.edu to test the installation. In order to avoid closing a session of Banner, be sure to open a new browser window when visiting another web site (e.g., check your email, searching, etc.). You can also change your browser preferences to automatically do this for you:

    1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
    2. Click the Advanced icon and scroll to the Tabbed Browsing section.
    3. Under "Open links from other applications in:", select either "a new window" or "a new tab in the most recent window".
    4. Click the OK button.

Data Extract

Data Extract is working a bit differently in Banner 7. When requesting Data Extract from the Help menu, hold down your Ctrl key until your data appears in a new Microsoft Excel window. If this does not work, you may need to set your open Banner session browser to allow popups for "banner.ualr.edu".

Changing your password

  1. Log in to Banner and type the form name GUAPSWD.
  2. Enter your current password in the "Oracle Password" field.
  3. Tab past the "Database" field to the "New Oracle Password" field, and type your new password.
  4. Tab to the "Verify Password" field and re-type your new password.
  5. Click the OK button to save your new password.

Password expiration

Banner passwords expire every 90 days, even if you are not logging in to Banner. You are given a grace period of 5 days before your password expires. During the grace period, you will see a message about password expiration when you log in. If you do not change your password within the grace period, your Banner account will be locked.

Unlocking your Banner account

If you are unable to log in to Banner, bring a picture ID to the Computing Services department (Old Student Union B Room 205). A temporary password will be generated that must be changed as soon as you next log in to Banner (follow the directions above to change your password).
