UALR Modem and ISDN dial-in access FAQ

  1. How do I obtain dial-in access privileges?
If you have an account on the mail system on campus you have the necessary privileges to dial-in and access campus systems. Telnet and rlogin access is provided for students. In addition, SLIP, PPP and ARA access is provided for faculty and staff. Check the login qualifiers document for more information.

  2. Why are students not allowed SLIP/PPP access?
The availability of dial-in access (number of ports available) precludes offering full access privileges to students at this time. Later expansion may allow student full SLIP/PPP access.

  3. What is ISDN and how is it used?
ISDN is a direct dial switched offering from the telephone company. You order ISDN service just as you did for your current phone service. (ISDN rates for phone service are higher than your current analog rates). Dial-in access may be analog up to 28.8kbs or ISDN up to 64kbs. The dial-in access will recognize your call as either analog of ISDN without user intervention. ISDN in addition to ordering ISDN service from the telephone company, will require special hardware to communicate to the UALR dial-in server. Contact Computing Services for recommendations.

  4. What access products are supported?
You may continue to use your current software with appropriate parameter changes (see Computing Services dial-in access page for documentation on supported products). Computing Services supports:

  5. What is SLIP/PPP?
SLIP/PPP connectivity are two Internet standards for transmission of IP packets over serial lines. The new dial-in access server at UALR supports both. SLIP or PPP allows your machine at home to function as if it were connected to the UALR network. It will allow you to run Netscape, FTP, and other Internet applications on your home system.

  6. What is the address of UALR Computing Services' homepage?
    http://compserv.ualr.edu/

  7. How do I get started?
If you are currently using the dial-in access to UALR's campus today, then you will be able to dial-in to the new dial-in server with your current hardware/software. Consult the Computing Services dial-in access page for any parameter settings that have changed.

If you are just getting started, then you will need software to communicate to the campus. The Labaides in the Library or SUA-105 labs have software for you to copy onto your diskette. Install the software on your system at home, then follow the directions in UALR Computing Services dialin instructions page.

If you are unable to obtain documentation, go by the Library or SUA-105 Labs and documentation will be available.
