MacKermit at UALR


Installing MacKermit on your Apple Macintosh computer

  1. Obtain a copy of MacKermit from one of the Computing Services Labs. You will need to supply a diskette, or you may download a copy of MacKermit to your computer now.
  2. Insert the MacKermit diskette into your Apple Macintosh computer.
  3. Double click on the diskette icon to show the diskette contents.
  4. Copy the MacKermit folder by dragging it to your hard drive icon.
  5. After you copy MacKermit from the diskette to your hard drive, eject the diskette.
  6. Double click on the "MacKermit Folder" icon on your hard drive to open the folder.
  7. Drag the "Kermit fonts" file to your System Folder on your hard drive.
  8. Double click on the "UALR VAX" icon to begin your terminal session.
  9. To dial the UALR modem bank, type "ATDT 2233771" followed by the RETURN key.
    You should hear the modem dial and the other side answer, then the screen will show a connect message.
  10. Press the <return> key to receive the "Username:" prompt.
  11. Enter your Athena username followed by the <return> key.
  12. The system will now as for your password. Enter your Athena Password followed by the <return> key.
  13. The screen should now display a prompt which reads "Ascend1>".
  14. You may telnet or rlogin to machines on campus by specifying their short-form name, or machines off campus by specifying their full name
    e.g.
  15. After you have completed your session on the remote machine and once again have an "Ascend1>" prompt, enter "quit" to finish the session.
  16. To quit the MacKermit program, use the mouse to select QUIT from the FILE pull-down menu.
