UALR PPP Win95 Setup

To configure dial-up networking in Windows95 to connect to the UALR
Ascend server:
- Close all open applications. Network configuration needs the whole
machine.
- Check the network setup
- Open the "My Computer" icon on desktop
- Open the "Control Panel" folder
- Open the "Network" icon
- Look under the choices available for "The following network components
are installed" and see if "Dial-Up Adapter" is present. If it
is there, select "OK"
If "Dial-Up Adapter" is not present,
- Select "Add"
- Select "Adapter"
- From the selection of available adapters, scroll thru the Manufacturers
list and select "Microsoft"
- under "Network Adapters", select "Dial-Up Adapter"
- Select "OK"
- Depending on your Win95 installation, you may be prompted to insert your
Win95 disks at this point.
- Once the "Dial-Up Adapter" is installed, look thru "The
following network components are installed" window again and see if
there is an entry for "TCP/IP".
If "TCP/IP" is not present,
- Select "Add"
- Select "Protocol"
- From the Manufacturers list, select "Microsoft"
- Under "Network Protocols", select TCP/IP
- Select OK.
- Depending on your Win95 installation, you may be prompted to insert your
Win95 disks at this point.
- Once these drivers are listed under the "The following network
components are installed" window in the Network Control Panel, you must
tell WIN95 to use the proper protocols.
- Select "Dial Up Adapter"
- Select "Properties".
- Select "Bindings"
- make sure that only TCP/IP is selected for use with the Dial-Up Adapter.
- Select "OK"
- Now, the TCP/IP settings must be configured.
- Select "TCP/IP"
- Select "Properties".
- Select the "IP Address" tab
- Select the option "Obtain an IP address automatically"
- Then select the "Gateway" tab
- Make sure that there are no entries here -- it should be blank
- Select the "DNS Configuration" tab
- Select the option "Enable DNS".
- In the "Host" field you may enter anything you like. This is
the name for your machine, but will not be shown to the world.
- In the "Domain" field, enter "ualr.edu".
- Under the heading "DNS Server Search Order",
- Enter 144.167.10.48
- Select "Add"
- Enter 130.184.7.103
- Select "Add"
- Select "OK".
- Whew, you're done with the configuration.
- Select "OK" in the Network panel.
- You will be prompted to restart your computer. You must restart
before you can continue.
- Close the "Control Panel" folder and the "My Computer"
folder.
- You've now configured the drivers, it's time to dial.
- Open the "My Computer" folder
- you should see a "Dial-Up Networking"
folder. If you do not, you did not completely install Windows95 and you
will need to go back and add that feature.
If you need to do so,
- Go to the Control Panel
- Select "Add/Remove Programs"
- Select "Windows Setup"
- Select "Communications"
- Select "Details"
- Make sure that "Dial-Up Networking" has been selected.
- Select "OK" to add these Win95 components.
- Depending on your Win95 installation, you may be prompted to insert your
Win95 disks at this point.
- Once you have a "Dial-Up Networking" folder in your "My
Computer" icon
- Open the "Dial-Up Networking" folder
- Select "Make New Connection"
- Enter a name for this new connection icon that will be created
("Type a name for the computer you are dialing");
one example would be to call this "UALR PPP".
- Select the modem type that you have from the choices available.
- Select "Configure"
- Within the "Configure" windows, select the "General"
tab
- Select the correct COM port for your modem.
- Select the maximum speed that your
computer can talk to your modem (which is not the same as the maximum speed that
your modem can talk to the remote modem); "57600" is a safe speed to
start with.
- Select the "Connection" tab
- Set Data bits 8, Parity None, and Stop bits 1
- Select "Advanced"
- Select "Use flow control"
- Select "Hardware"
- Select "OK"
You should now be back at the "Make New Connection" window
- Select "Next"
- Under "Telephone Number", enter 515-6150
- Select "Next"
- Finally select "Finish".
You will now have an icon called "UALR PPP" (or
whatever you called this) in your Dial-Up Networking folder.
- If you have call waiting, you will want to disable it.
To do this, open the control panel again.
- Open the Modem control panel
- Select Dialing Properties
- Select the check box next to "This location has call waiting"
- Place the necessary code to disable call waiting (usually *70) in
the box.
- Now that you have created the "UALR PPP" (or whatever you called
it) in your Dial-Up Networking folder
- Now you can actually try it out. Make sure your modem is connected and
turned on.
- Open (double-click) this new icon ("UALR PPP")
- Enter your UALR assigned username in the Username box and
your password in the password box.
Note: If your UALR account is on a machine other than Athena, you will
have to specify which computer with the /node= qualifier.
(e.g. if the user jruser had an account on Sigma, she would
enter jruser/node=sigma in the Username field.
- Select "Connect" to begin dialing.
- A small box should appear which displays the status of the connection.
it should indicate Dialing, Logging on to Network, etc.
When this status reads "Connected at ....bps", you are online.
- You may now start any of your network applications such as Telnet or
Netscape.
- To logout/quit, just select "Disconnect" in the "Connected
to UALR PPP" window.
