INTEL ISEF

The Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, provides an annual forum for more than 1500 high school students from 65 countries, regions, & territories to showcase their independent research as they compete for over $4 million annually.¬† The Intel ISEF is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9-12.

Familiarize yourself with the INTEL ISEF website.  Here you will find guidelines on designing projects of high quality, a description of the categories in which you can compete at CARSEF, the rules for each category, and the forms you must fill out and have been approved prior to starting your research project.

Teachers, if you need assistance knowing which forms your students need to complete, begin by reading the rules for your student’s category (the rule book will list which forms apply to projects in each category) available on the¬†¬†INTEL ISEF website.¬† If you need guidance on how to accurately complete them to avoid SRC violations & potential disqualification, please see the SRC Advice link. We want everyone to have a positive experience participating in CARSEF.¬† You can also contact us!¬† We are happy to advise you.

Registration Materials

Reminder: Large/urban schools should have a school science fair and select category winners prior to registering students for CARSEF.  Each large/urban school is invited to bring their first, second, third and honorable mention winners in each category from their school fair.  If you are coming from a small school that does not have lots of participation in a science fair, a school fair is not required.  We want to encourage the small schools from our rural counties to participate and bring as many students as they can to CARSEF.

Who Can Compete at CARSEF

Students in private schools, public schools, or who are home schooled are ALL eligible to compete at CARSEF.  We limit our competition to students attending school in the following counties: Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Lonoke, Monroe, Perry, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, Van Buren, White, Woodruff and Yell.  If you do not attend school in one of these counties, then let us help you find the Regional Science Fair that serves your home county.

Divisions:  CARSEF has two (2) levels of competition.

The Junior Division is open to students in grades 4-8.

The Senior Division is open to students in grades 9-12.

You can find the registration forms for each division below.¬† Be sure to send in COPIES of the appropriate INTEL ISEF forms with your registration form. KEEP the originals you had approved prior to experimentation in your Project Data Book….send US COPIES!

SRC Advice

We know that navigating the rules and regulations for projects competing in INTEL ISEF affiliate fairs can be confusing, so here are some hints to completing your paperwork correctly.

Hints For Students

1. Start by exploring the INTEL ISEF web site.  There are many great resources here such as the student handbook, category descriptions, tips for writing effective abstracts and building effective display boards.  You can read advice from students who have competed at the International Science and Engineering Fair and search through abstracts from past years ISEF competitors.

2.  Read the Rules for your category.  Then read them again!!  Be sure the procedure you propose in your Research Plan adheres to the rules for your category.  Your teacher will not approve a project proposal that is in violation of these rules.  Some categories will require approval of your project by a review board (called an IRB or SRC board) before you can start your experiment.  Be sure you get these approvals before you begin your project!!  Then, as you complete your project, refer back to your category rules again to be sure any minor alterations you make in your approved procedure do not violate the rules.  The CARSEF SRC Committee will not approve a project for competition that has violated these rules.

3. Don’t Procrastinate!!¬† The best projects are worked on steadily.¬† Be sure to keep a Project Data Book (like a journal where you log your dates/hours spent on the project, record your data, take notes during the background research stage, etc) from the time you begin until completion of your project.¬† Your logbook is Your proof of Your dedication to Your project. It will need to be displayed at the CARSEF, along with all your ISEF forms, your final paper, and your display board.

Hints for Teachers

1.  Start Early!  Begin the process of having students complete research proposals and appropriate ISEF forms early in the school year.  Then progress with background research, experimentation and data collection, and aim to have projects completed a month or so before the science fair so students have plenty of time to write final papers and build their display board.  If you teach at a large school, you will need to have a school fair to select the best projects to attend CARSEF.  Small, rural schools are encouraged to bring any interested student to CARSEF.  We hope to see greater participation this year from our rural counties!

2. Have your students complete Form 1, Form 1a, Form 1b,  (with parent signature), a complete research plan (instructions for which print with form 1a), and any other required paperwork for their category and submit them to you as a project proposal prior to beginning their research project.  Some categories will require many forms to be completed and will require prior approval from professionals in the field before the student can begin researching.  Your school will need to assemble an IRB and SRC board to review and approve some projects prior to experimentation.  Guidelines for IRB/SRC boards can be found under the INTEL ISEF website.  Adherence to the rules for categories is key!

3. If you need help figuring out how to navigate the INTEL ISEF rules, regulations, and forms, please contact us! It is very confusing at first, we know.  Let us help you!
