Commencement happens but twice a year. The large-scale event couldn’t reach everyone until we began live-streaming the ceremonies a few years ago. Now the entire world can watch in real time (which could mean midnight. in some areas, but still).
We’ve refined that experience with each successive graduation and have the system down to a science (or at least an art).
In Fall 2012, we let two graduates talk to their families back in Ireland thanks to Google Hangouts. We gave the stage to our students so they could express their gratitude.
Using Google Hangouts allowed us to stream directly to YouTube, which then archives the ceremonies for us on our channel.
The process isn’t as simple as it seems on its face. It requires a lot of testing, cables and dongles galore, some more testing, and all hands on deck.
