A. Teaching

Teaching: Curriculum changes, new courses and course revisions:

The Department added an additional course requirement (ERSC 4473 Hydrogeology) to the BS Geology and BS Geology, Environmental Geology concentration. This was based on results from our ABET Continuous Improvement plan and discussions with the ERSC Advisory Council.

Dr. Ruhl and Dr. Shroat-Lewis created a new course, ERSC 4399 ST: Advanced Bahamas Research - 9 students and 4 faculty members conducted field research and prepared manuscripts on research topic of interest on San Salvador Island, Bahamas.  Dr. Forrest Payne and Dr. Scott Woolbright (UALR Biology) also participated as research mentors.

 Dr. DeAngelis

  • Created ERSC 4199 ST: Upper Midwest Geology course to expose students to the field geology of Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan. This course included weekly planning and informational meetings, and a one-week field trip to Wisconsin and Michigan.
  • Revised ERSC 3410 Mineralogy to include a service learning component and additional mineral resources content. Revisions were motivated based on ABET Continuous Improvement assessment activities and as an outcome of attending the UALR Service Learning Academy
  • Revised ERSC 4320 Field Geology II to include the use of mobile digital devices for field mapping.

Dr. Connelly

  • Revised ERSC 4430 Structural Geology based on results of ABET Continuous Improvement assessment.

Dr. McMillan

  • Developed virtual mapping projects in ERSC 4320 Field Geology II as an alternative to the traveling course curriculum for students, due to physical limitations or personal situations, who are not able to attend
  • Developed skills training exercises in ERSC 4421/5421 Introduction to GIS to ensure students practice collecting and acquiring GIS/GPS data using multiple modes and from multiple sources.

Dr. Ruhl

  • Revised ERSC 4473 Hydrogeology and ERSC 4322 Environmental Geology to include a service learning component. Revisions were motivated as an outcome of attending the UALR Service Learning Academy and based on ABET Continuous Improvement assessment.
  • Revised ERSC 4320 Field Geology II to include the use of mobile digital devices for field mapping.
  • Revised ERSC 1304 Earth and the Environment to be a flipped classroom course format.
  • Revised ERSC 1104 Earth and the Environment Lab to include more in-class and hands-on activities.

Dr. Shroat-Lewis

  • Revised SCHL 1322 Science and Society II to include group project proposals to address a sustainability challenge on campus.

Dr. Spinler

  • Revised ERSC 1304 Earth and the Environment lecture – redesigned face-to-face course for online delivery
  • Revised ERSC 1104 Earth and the Environment lab (summer 2016)- redesigned face-to-face course for online delivery
  • Revised ERSC 1104 Earth and the Environment lab – redesigned and developed new lab exercises for the face-to-face course to incorporate local data and campus field sites into lab exercises for a more hands-on learning environment
