University to Offer Aid to Financially Needy Science Students

Got good grades in science, but don’t think a “right-brain” degree is in the future?

UALR just landed a $579,175 grant from the National Science Foundation to provide just the kind of assistance that talented, but financially needy students can use to transform them into biologists, chemists, and geologists.

The NSF’s S-STEM Program – Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – will allow UALR to enlist at least 18 students with scholarships averaging $7,000 a year. UALR is the only Arkansas university to receive the grant.

Pre-med students are not eligible for the funds. The new scholarships target bright, talented students who may not have considered majoring in the sciences.

“This is not just a scholarship program,” said Dr. Janet Lanza, a professor of biology and one of the managers of the S-STEM program. “It is an attempt to improve science education in Arkansas elementary and secondary schools as well as improve the economic development of the state.”
