Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society

Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honors Society. At present, there is not an active chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society on the UALR campus. In order to activate a chapter, a minimum of 6 interested students who meet the qualifications below must contact the Chair of the English Department, Dr. Murphy (501-569-8324 or remurphy@ualr.edu) and sign a petition to send to the Executive Director of the Society. Requirements for Membership Application

There are two types of membership in Sigma Tau Delta: active (for qualified English majors) and associate (for qualified students who are not majoring or minoring in English).

    To apply for either an active or associate membership, you must:
  • have a minimum of a 3.0 in English
  • rank at least in the highest thirty-five percent of your class in general scholarship
  • have completed at least three semesters of college work

Benefits

    Membership in Sigma Tau Delta offers the following advantages:
  • gain outward recognition of personal accomplishments
  • network with other people in your field on the local, regional, national and international levels
  • gain the opportunity to participate in and present your work at conferences and conventions at the local, regional, national and international level
  • receive two issues of The Newsletter with your initial fee
  • receive one issue of The Rectangle (an award-winning literary publication)
  • become eligible to contribute to The Rectangle
  • become eligible to compete for several $1,000-$2,500 scholarships and awards
  • become eligible to compete for internships and graduate assistantship opportunities

The Association of College Honor Societies’ “Booklet of Information” (p.12) notes: “In a letter dated April 13, 1973, the U.S. Civil Service Commission stated ‘Membership in a national honorary society meets one of the requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in numerous professional and technical occupations in the Federal service. However, applicants must meet all of the requirements as described in the particular Federal Job Announcement covering the positions for which they apply.’ This affords a very tangible acknowledgement that organizations maintaining the honor society standards merit distinction.” This also means that students graduating with a B.S. or B.A., many of them entering at GS-5 level, move up considerably in the salary scale–up to $5000 or more per year–for membership in Sigma Tau Delta. Over a period of time, this makes a very considerable difference in salary!
