Finding family histories

Dr. Moira Maguire stands as an advocate for Irish children through her research into their history in the early 20th century. This assistant professor’s sensitivity into the study of a frequently forgotten population’s experience has earned applause from colleagues and focused attention on the involvement of both church and state institutions.

Moira MaguireShe has helped numerous adopted children and birth parents learn their true heritage and heal wounds through her embrace of a country’s painful legacy. Dr. Maguire’s work in what has been termed a sensationalist topic – the treatment of unmarried mothers and their babies in Ireland – brought the topic into the realm of academic discourse. Her forthcoming book on the subject, as well as numerous articles and presentations, have earned her international recognition as a rising star in the field of Irish history.

Dr. Maguire earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and history from George Washington University and her master’s degree in history from Northeastern University. Her doctoral degree was awarded at American University. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Alpha Theta and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth.
