Building up the Builders
An active member of the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) Construction and Health Committee, Jim Carr has served the public interest of the residential construction industry by promoting the policies that make housing a national priority. He is a professor of construction management in the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology.
He co-developed the first-of-its-kind NAHB training course, Building a House, which offers students the basic knowledge of the home-building process and the key safety hazards typical to residential construction.
It was one of several training courses he helped develop in the area of construction safety. He has taught a course of basic home building to more than 200 staff members of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
“Jim continues to bring honor upon himself, UA Little Rock, and to the NAHB Education Program in all he does as an active NAHB member, instructor, ‘subject matter expert,’ and volunteer,” said Michael R. Copp, senior vice president of NAHB Education.
In addition to his focus on safety, Carr also has dedicated himself to the housing industry in part by earning three NAHB designations to include Certified Green Builder, Certified Graduate Remodeler, and Graduate Master Builder.
Carr is considered an outstanding teacher based on student evaluations. He has presented research across the country and in Brazil and China.
“His major accomplishment is the contribution he has made to the construction industry,” said Michael Tramel, chair of the Department of Construction Management. “He is currently the Associated Schools of Construction Region V director and has been awarded the group’s Outstanding Educator Award for service to construction education.”
Carr is serving in his 10th year at UA Little Rock. He earned a B.S degree in education from Clarion State College in 1969 and an M.S. degree in construction management from the University of Oklahoma in 1988.
