Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship

Current UALR students, incoming freshman, and returning adult students qualify for thousands of dollars in funding from the Scholarship Lottery. As part of the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship program, awards are renewable every year, which means you can get as much as $20,000 towards your bachelor’s degree.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the YOUniversal application
  2. Complete the FAFSA application

Deadline to apply is June 1st.

General Requirements

  • Arkansas resident
  • Accepted for admissions at an approved institution of higher education
  • Have not earned a baccalaureate degree
  • Completed the FAFSA application
  • Not owe a refund on a federal or state financial aid grant for higher education
  • Not in default on a federal or state student loan
  • Not borrowed in excess of annual or aggregate student loan limits
  • Not incarcerated at the time of application or while receiving awards
  • Complied with the US Selective Service Requirement
  • Certified drug free

High School Students

Must meet one of the following:

  • Graduated from an AR public high school and successfully completed the Smart Core AND
    • Achieved a 2.50 high school GPA OR
    • 19+ ACT or equivalent
  • Graduated from an AR public high school before the 2013-2014 academic year and did not complete Smart Core, but has earned a 2.50+ high school GPA AND
    • 19+ ACT or equivalent OR
    • Scored proficient + on all state-mandated end-of-course assessments
  • After December 31, 2010, students who qualify under #1 or #2 but graduated from an identified grade inflated high school must achieve a 2.50+ high school GPA AND
    • 19+ ACT or equivalent
    • Scored proficient + on all state-mandated end-of-course assessments
  • Students with an identified disability who were not required to complete Smart Core, but have earned a 2.50+ high school GPA AND
    • 19+ ACT or equivalent
    • Scored proficient + on all state-mandated end-of-course assessments
  • Graduated from a private, home school, or out-of-state high school and earned a 19+ ACT or equivalent

Current College Students

Must meet all of the following:

  • Entered post-secondary education before the 2010-2011 academic year as full-time freshman within 12 months of high school graduation
  • Has been continuously enrolled as a full-time student
  • Completed at least 12 credit hours
  • Earned a 2.50+ cumulative post-secondary GPA

Non-Traditional Students

Must meet one of the following:

  • Graduated from AR public high school and achieved a 2.50 high school GPA or 19+ ACT composite or equivalent
  • Completed at least 12 credit hours or coursework at an approved post-secondary institution and earned a 2.50+ cumulative GPA
  • Graduated from a private, home school, or out-of-state high school or earned a GED and earned a 19+ ACT or equivalent

Award Amounts

Award amounts for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship Program are set by the Arkansas State Legislature each year. Students may qualify for an award of up to $5,000 for attending a 4-year university.

Award amounts for students who are receiving their first scholarship for the 2013-2014 school year will be $2,000 for the first year, $3,000 for the second year, $4,000 for the third year, and $5,000 for the fourth year.

Awards for non-traditional students who are enrolled part-time (less than 15 hours) are prorated:

  • ½ for 6-8 credit hours
  • Âľ for 9-14 credit hours

Enrollment is documented as of the 11th class day for scholarship eligibility.

Renewal Requirements

  • NOTE: Effective fall 2013, any student who completes NO HOURS in the fall semester, will not receive the scholarship in the spring. Students must make academic progress toward earning a college degree to keep the scholarship award.
