Lady Trojans win tenth straight
The Lady Trojans defeated the Florida International University Panthers 54-45 on Wednesday, Jan. 19, and the Florida Atlantic University Owls 68-64 on Saturday, Jan. 22, going 2-0 on the road trip. They won their 10th consecutive game of the year and improved to 7-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.
In the game against FIU (7-14, 2-5 SBC), the Trojans scored a season low of 13 points in the first half before shooting 65 percent in the second half to pull away with the victory. Sophomore Janette Merriex led UALR with 17 points, shooting 4-7 from the 3-point line.
Senior Chastity Reed had 12 points on 6-20 (30 percent) from the field against the Panthers and added four steals and three blocks. Reed led the team with 19 points against FAU (4-14, 1-6 SBC) on 7-21 (33 percent) shooting from the field with eight rebounds and four steals. She shot 32 percent from the field for the road trip. This means the team doesn’t have to rely on her shooting well to get victories, especially on the road, even though the two Florida schools may be considered inferior competition.
Leading 56-45 with 7:48 remaining in the FAU game, the Trojans (13-5, 7-0 SBC) went on a 12-0 run for the next six minutes, making it a 23-point deficit for the Owls and sealing the game for UALR.
Junior Marian Kursh had a solid road trip scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds against FAU for her first double-double of the season and fifth of her Trojan career. She had nine points and 11 rebounds in the game against FIU and averaged 13.5 points, shooting 82 percent from the field, and 10.5 rebounds for the two games.
The Trojans have a week off before facing rival Arkansas State at the Jack Stephens Center Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
