Men drop one on road
The UALR men’s basketball team lost to the University of South Alabama Jaguars 92-79 on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Mobile, Ala. The loss knocked the Trojans out of the running for a first-round bye in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament starting March 5. Six of the seven players that USA played scored in double figures.
Trojan guard Alex Garcia-Mendoza hit a jump shot to make it a 2-0 UALR lead, but USA took a 4-2 lead with 17:57 left on a layup by Javier Carter and never trailed again. South Alabama (12-14, 6-9 SBC) led 41-29 at halftime and opened the second half on 19-5 run to push the Trojan deficit to 26 points with 15 minutes left.
In the next 9:45, the Trojans (15-14, 7-7 SBC) outscored the Jaguars 33-15 capped by a Chuck Guy 3-pointer to get UALR within eight points, but that is as close as it would get.
South Alabama out-rebounded UALR 45-32 and shot 55 percent from the field, compared to the Trojans’ 41 percent. The Trojans were also bad in transition, allowing USA to score 26 fast-break points opposed to UALR’s six.
The Trojans had four players score in double figures led by senior guard Solomon Bozeman’s 20. Senior forward Montrell Thornton led UALR with seven rebounds. Martino Brock led USA with 19 points while Augustine Rubit had 11 rebounds to lead the Jags, along with 11 points for a double-double.
