The Arkansas State Red Wolves scored five runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 11-5 victory over the Trojans on Friday, March 18, at Gary Hogan Field in the Sun Belt Conference opener. ASU left-fielder Logan Uxa went 3-5 with four RBIs in the game and hit a three-run homerun to cap the five-run first.

Trojan senior pitcher Garret Graziano (2-3, 4.94 ERA) started and gave up seven runs and nine hits in four innings in the loss. After the five-run first, Graziano settled down and set down eight consecutive batters, striking out four, from the end of the second inning through the fourth. He had six strikeouts and no walks for the game.

The Red Wolves (10-9, 1-0 SBC) started the fifth inning with a single from catcher Tyler Smith and a double from center-fielder Todd Baumgartner to chase Graziano from the game. UALR freshman Andrew Hohn relieved and allowed a sacrifice fly to first-baseman Jordan Castaldo before getting out of the jam.

Trojan shortstop Greg Garcia went 2-4 with two RBIs and led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to left field. Garcia moved to third on a single to right field from lead-off man Sean Bignall before scoring the Trojans’ first run when Jason Houston bounced into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Trojans (8-9, 0-1 SBC) would score four more runs in the last three innings after being down 11-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Bignall, who went 2-5,  hit his second homerun of the year in the eighth inning. UALR right-fielder Nick Rountree went 2-4 with an RBI and Houston went 2-5.

ASU starting pitcher Andy Ferguson (3-1) held the Trojans at bay, giving up two runs in seven innings, and throwing 102 pitches. Baumgartner went 3-4 and Castaldo went 2-4 with two RBIs in the win for the Red Wolves.
