Wyn Norwood, UALR men’s golf coach, has Team USA in second place after round one at the World University Games in Shenzen, China.

The team shot a five-under par 211 and is two strokes behind current leader, Japan. The team was led by Jace Long (University of Iowa), who shot an opening round 68.

Other members of the five-man team include UALR’s Nick Benton, Vince India (University of Iowa) , Jason Millard (Middle Tennessee) and Alex Carpenter (Abilene Christian).

The matches are being played at Mission Hills Golf Club. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it is the largest golf facility in the world with 11 championship golf courses.

Norwood was chosen very early in the year to lead the team.  “I was stunned to say the least at first and very honored,” he said back in January, when asked for a reaction to the news. “It means something special to represent your country,” he continued.

The games are scheduled for August 12-23, with the golf matches taking place from August 17-20.
