UALR captured their first Sun Belt Conference series of the year with a 7-3 victory over Troy on Sunday, March 25, at Gary Hogan Field.

Sophomore Ethan Schlechte (2-0) took the mound for the Trojans and held Troy hitless for 6.2 innings. He ended up surrendering just one run on three hits and earned his second victory of the year.

Runs were at a premium in the early going. UALR (15-9, 2-4 SBC) exploded for five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Senior Nick Rountree walked and came home on a triple by senior Sean Bignall. Junior Blake Johnson singled up the middle to score Bignall, putting the Trojans ahead 2-0.

Sophomore Bryson Thionnet was hit by a pitch, putting two men on for junior David Guarno. Guarno took a fastball high and deep to left field, plating two runs.

Head coach Scott Norwood spoke afterwards about the game.

“Today was a big win for us,” he said. “Troy is an outstanding team and it means a lot for us to know we can come through against a team like that.”

The Trojans put two more runs across in the bottom of the fifth inning, extending the lead to seven runs.

UALR will head to Stillwater, Ok. to take on the Cowboys of Oklahoma State University on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30.
